How many visitors your site gets is determined in large part on how high the major search engines rank or list your site when someone requests a search and the results are found on your web page. Where your site is listed when a search is preformed is called your Search Engine Ranking for the search term that was selected.

Most of the major search engines use the number of external web sites that point or link to your site to determine how popular your web site is and how high your site should rank when someone requests a search. Links from other web sites that point to your site are called "Back Links" because they point "back" to your web site.

Google uses the term PageRank or PR as a measure of what they consider a web sites popularity, value or authority is. PageRank has a rather complex meaning so the short version is that it is a measure of an individual page's "value". A link from page A to page B is considered a vote for page B, but Google also analyzes the page that casts the vote. If page A is an "important" page then the vote for page B is considered a more "important" vote and page A will give up some of it's value to page B.

PageRank can be found on the Google Toolbar and the Google directory.

The Google Toolbar's PageRank feature displays a visited page's PageRank as a whole number between 0 and 10. The most popular websites have a PageRank of 10. The least have a PageRank of 0.

The Google Directory PageRank is an 8-unit measurement. These values can be viewed in the Google Directory. Unlike the Google Toolbar which shows the PageRank value by a mouseover of the greenbar, the Google Directory does not show the PageRank as a numeric value but only as a green bar.

Newly registered domains are automatically assigned PR0 and will stay that way until other websites begin to link to them - this helps increase their PageRank and also encourages the Google Web Crawler to index the site's pages more often.

The PageRank scoring system is based in part on Link Popularity.

No matter what your website has to offer, if it doesn't have Link Popularity, no one will find it. Without visitors going to your web site, you won't be able to make any money.

Don't worry so much about understanding all this, just remember that your web sites popularity can be summed up by the term "Link Popularity" and that you need to increase the number of links pointing to your web site if you want to get more traffic from the major search engines.
